Next Meeting – Tuesday 28 May 2024 to St Aidan’s RSPB reserve.
Meet in the RSPB car park LS26 8 AL (SE399287). We meet at 10.30.
There are toilets in the car park, and for non-members there is a charge of £4, although it is possible to park on the road outside and walk in.
Bring lunch – bench seating is rather limited in the reserve, so you might want to bring a folding stool or sitting mat. We will go on our usual walk, which is about 3 km, although there is scope to walk much further. For the most part , the walk is flat, but there is a slope down (and up on the way back!). The tracks are good, but may be wet if the promised rain arrives tomorrow.
We should see the Black-necked Grebes carrying their young on their backs. This is probably the best place in the country to see them. The other fairly common bird id the Bittern, which will be moving around to find food for the young. There are several pairs breeding here. What else…. lots are possible. Last year we watched a Grasshopper Warbler. Don’t forget your binoculars!
